Mike's Emmy Picks: Supporting Actress - Comedy

This post obviously comes with the same caveat as Brett's, except I watch even less shows than he does. Still I offer a unique opinion that is ultimately better than Brett's and yours as well. I don't know your opinions unless you post them in the comments, but I imagine they're along the lines of "That shade of blue is nice" or the sound of you struggling to sound out the "B" in bambat.

First up: Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series

Of course I lead off with the toughest category. Most women aren't funny. Moan and complain all you want, but you know it's true. Name the best three female comedians off the top of your head. Name three female comedians at all. If you're counting those that have made the transition to film or TV, name five then. Thought so. Okay, good. That's out of the way. Here goes nothing.

Caitlin Olsen, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia

Up against the comedic genius of hubby Rob McElenney, Glenn Howerton, and Charlie Day, she doesn't quite stand out. But all in all, she has her moments and holds her own.

Check her out in: Season 4, Episode 3, "America's Next Top Paddy's Billboard Model Contest"

Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock

The 3rd best* scene stealer on 30 Rock, her character Jenna really brings in the laughs. From what I've heard, she's basically playing a slightly more funny and less annoying as fuck version of herself. If you can get paid to act like yourself I guess you went right somewhere along the line.

Check her out in: Season 3, Episode 19, "The Ones"

Kristen Chenoweth, Pushing Daisies

I'm not going to try to hide my bias toward Pushing Daisies. I could go on and on about how it's unlike anything you've ever seen and how great it is and what have you, but I won't. Chenoweth is one of the brightest spots in the show. There is a danger her character Olive Snook could come off as annoying or irrelevant, but Chenoweth plays it well.

Check her out in: Season 2, Episode 3, "Bad Habits"

Cobie Smulders, How I Met Your Mother

As an avid reader of the bambat, you're aware How I Met Your Mother is it's official show. This nomination comes as no surprise. Her character Robin has been able to grow in a unique way this season. As we get farther from season 2, we see her less as Ted's former love interest and she stands more on her own. How they move forward with her and Barney will be a great challenge but I know Bays and Thomas are up to the task.

Check her out in: Season 4, Episode 24, "The Leap"

Judy Reyes, Scrubs

I'll fully admit I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel here. Don't get me wrong, Reyes is a fine actress. And her thankless role as Carla deserves award recognition. But let's put it this way. If comedy were an I.V. she still wouldn't be able to place it. That said, she's a fine actress on a fine show.

Check her out in: Season 8, Episode 18, "My Finale"

The winner. Drumroll please........

Kristen Chenoweth.

That's it. What? No, she's the best supporting actress on the best comedy on television last year. Bias my foot, I'll pick who's deserving.

*The first two are Tracy Morgan's Tracy Jordan and Chris Parnell's Dr. Leo Spaceman.
